The ubiquitous supermarket basket makes an ideal planter, as it holds a lot of potting mix.

Carrots and beets in jazzy tubs

you will need

gimlet (for boring holes) dibble

plastic or rubber flexible buckets, about 12 inches (30cm) high and 14 inches (35cm) in diameter

soilless multipurpose potting mix with some added loam-based mix

beet (beetroot) and carrot seeds

fine sand

It’s easy to see when beets are ready for cropping, and all parts of the plant are edible, so nothing is wasted.
